For some, dance is merely a performance, but for those inspired and seeing it through the intended lens, it is a language of discipline and dedication, where dreams can become a lifetime reality. A language that two young dancers from the University of Baguio community carried all the way from the City of Pines to the national stage.
Held from August 28 to 31 at the MNL Dance Prix, Maybank Performing Arts Theater, Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Arts Center, Taguig, Baguio-trained ballerinas from Ballet Baguio turned months and years of training into remarkable achievements. As part of a seven-member corps de ballet, fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Psychology (STELA) student Ms. Yesha Angelie Layugan Alimondo competed in the Senior B (Classical Ballet Ensemble) category, performing alongside fellow dancers from Baguio.
Their performance, titled “June,” was more than a showcase of technical skill and graceful movement. Inspired by June brides, the classical ballet piece celebrated love, commitment, and the beginning of new chapters in life. It also drew on Baguio City’s identity as a widely celebrated, scenic wedding destination. Their efforts were met with high honors, as the performance was awarded a Gold Medal and was proclaimed Overall Best Ensemble in Classical Ballet, among other distinctions at the competition.

On stage, the dancers transformed these ideas into movement, a tell-tale story of love and new beginnings while carrying with them the character and identity of their hometown. For Alimondo, the achievement represents another meaningful chapter in a journey that brings together her life as a student, a dancer, and a young individual pursuing her passions.
UB and Ballet Baguio’s Love for the Game: 2026 MNL Dance Prix
Joining here in the spotlight was UB Senior Science High Ms. Jiyana Viel Audrei Maymaya, a Grade 11 student under the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (HUMSS) strand. Observed in the Senior A (Classical Ballet Solo) category, Ms. Maymaya won a Gold Award, showcasing the poise, artistry, and discipline she had acquired through her training. Her performance also earned her a scholarship to compete in the ABAP International Dance Competition in 2027, giving her another opportunity to develop as a dancer and showcase her art on a global stage.
The direction that led the two aspiring professionals (along with other esteemed performers) to a slot on the roster for national and global opportunities was the artistic director of Ballet Baguio, Ms. Jacqueline Go Ramon. Shaping the dancers’ abilities and self-assurance. Her work with Alimondo, the ensemble, and Maymaya earned her an Outstanding Teacher Award, which acknowledged her personal contribution to their success.
Yet, for Ms. Go, the medals are only one part of a much bigger story.
“For over 23 years, we have worked tirelessly to put Baguio City on the map in the world of ballet,”
– she shared.
That journey, she explained, has never been carried by dancers alone. It has been shaped by their diligence and determination, strengthened by the support of their families and schools, and sustained by the city government.
“With the diligence and determination of our dancers, together with the support of their families and their academic schools, as well as of our city government, we are now being recognized across the country,”
– miss Go said.
For more than two decades, Ballet Baguio has continued to nurture dancers and bring their artistry beyond the city’s familiar mountain landscape. The achievements at the MNL Dance Prix 2026 are another testament to that enduring commitment. More importantly, they remind us that behind every medal is a dancer who chose to keep showing up.
To train, learn, perform, and believe in what is possible, no matter how far-fetched or delusional it may seem.
For Alimondo and Maymaya, their victories are personal milestones. For their families and mentors, they are moments of pride. And Baguio is another reason to celebrate the creative talents that continue to emerge from the city.
“We take pride in contributing to Baguio as a UNESCO Creative City,”
Miss Go said.
From the rehearsal studio to the competition stage, these young ballerinas have shown that the spirit of Baguio can travel far beyond its mountains. With every carefully placed step, every movement, and every performance, they continue to bring not only their dreams but also the pride of the community that helped them take flight.
